Coffee drinkers are facing another round of price increases as Starbucks, J.M. Smucker, and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters pass along the rising costs of beans.
Starbucks confirmed Wednesday it will raise the prices for bagged coffee sold at its U.S stores by 17 percent, and 6 percent at its Canadian locations, effective July 12.
Its move comes a day after J.M. Smucker raised prices for the fourth time in the past year. Smucker, which sells Folgers, Dunkin Donuts and Millstone, is upping those prices by 11 percent.
Since May 2010, Smucker has jacked up prices 34 percent to try to stay a step ahead of the commodities market. Starbucks is raising prices for a 12-ounce bag of coffee at its U.S. stores to a range of $11.95 to $14.95. It is the first price increase since September 2009. The last time Starbucks raised prices for bagged coffee at its Canadian locations was in October 2007. The Seattle company last year raised prices for some of its drinks to counter rising costs for milk and unroasted beans. Green Mountain said May 3 it’s raising prices by 10 percent.
That comes after an increase last fall of 10 percent to 15 percent on K-Cup portion packs used in the company’s Keurig single-cup coffee brewer.
Over the past 12 months, coffee contract prices for Arabica beans are up 99 percent on the IntercontinentalExchange. That has prompted Maxwell House coffee maker Kraft Foods to raise prices three times since August 2010, an increase amounting to 43 percent.

Gong Cha may be popular for its signature milk teas, but milk teas are not the only drinks that are good. The "House Special Milk Coffee" is highly recommended too!
Gong Cha House Special Milk Coffee
On our first try, we ordered "Less sugar (70%)" and regular ice, it turned out sweet and nice as it did not deter the coffee taste.
Gong Cha House Special Milk Coffee with 30% sugar level
On our second try, we ordered "Little sugar (30%)" and it was not sweet at all.
Overall, Gong Cha’s House Special Milk Coffee is great like its milk teas, nothing short of distinctive and strong coffee flavor. For our next visit, maybe we’ll just order "Half sugar (50%)" for optimum taste.
Gong Cha’s House Special Milk Coffee retails at MYR 6.90. Available at Gong Cha Malaysia SS15 and The Gardens Mid Valley.

Gong Cha is a popular bubble tea outlet from Taiwan and it has finally reached Malaysia after establishing itself in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, China, Macau and Philippines. Besides its SS15 outlet, recently, it was opened in The Gardens Mall in Mid Valley, much later than its competitor.
Gong Cha, The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley
You can choose the sugar level, i.e. No sugar (0%), Little sugar (30%), Half sugar (50%), Less sugar (70%) and Full sugar (100%) and how much ice you want, i.e. "Normal", "Less Ice" or "No Ice" I chose 30% sugar level and "Normal Ice" and the level of sweetness is still there but it’s lot healthier.
Gong Cha Signature Milk Green Tea
There are three ways to sip the milk tea.
- Sip the freshly brewed tea through the milk froth without a straw.
- Slurp some tea followed by the milk through the straw for a smooth aftertaste.
- Stir and enjoy a perfect blend of milky froth and aromatic tea.
But since I brought it back to my office and hence, the drink got mixed up by itself. Still, the milk green tea is quite tantalizing and refreshing.
Gong Cha Malaysia Menu
Gong Cha Signature Milk Green Tea retails at MYR 5.90 but there are extra add-ons such as Pearl, Coconut Jelly, White Pearl, etc. which will cost additional MYR 1.00 to MYR 2.00.
Gong Cha is located at Lot S-238B, 2nd Floor at The Gardens Mall, Mid Valley.
